How Does Diode Laser Hair Removal Work?

The key is to match specific wavelengths of laser energy to a target meanwhile avoiding damaging the surrounding tissues. Based on “selective photothermolysis theory,” wavelengths of 755nm, 810nm, and 1064nm are highly absorbed by the melanin in hair follicles.

When absorbing laser energy, the melanin heats up, and therefore the roots and blood flow to hair follicles are destroyed. The damage disables hair from growing again.

Handpieces of Multi-wavelength

Smedtrum Hair Removal Diode Laser System offers two types of handpieces. One with 810nm single wavelength and the other one combines three wavelengths of 755nm, 810nm, and 1064nm. 

The Single (810nm)

• 810nm is also known as the “Golden Standard Wavelength,” in which it is absorbed moderately by melanin. Therefore, the 810nm wavelength diode laser is suitable for all skin types, and much safer for people with dark skin color, as well as ideal for arms, legs, cheeks, and beard.

The Trio (755nm+810nm+1064nm)

•  755nm wavelength

highly absorbed by melanin and specifically effective for light-colored thin hair and light skin tone (Fitzpatrick Skin type I, II, III). Also, the penetration is ideal for superficially embedded hair in areas such as the eyebrows and upper lip.

•  810nm wavelength     

suitable and ideal for all skin phototypes and all kinds of hair.

•  1064nm wavelength  

lower melanin absorption, ideal for dealing with dark and thick hair or with dark skin or tanned skin person (Fitzpatrick Skin type III-IV tanned, V and VI). Besides, the 1064nm wavelength has the deepest penetration which can target the follicular papilla and treat deeply embedded hair in areas such as the scalp, underarm, and pubic areas.
